DOCUMENTARY - IF FOOD RUNS OUT

DOCUMENTARY OVERVIEW

Will global food shortages lead to mobs, empty fields and panic? What can be done to prevent this and can the solutions be implemented in time? This documentary explores the perfect storm brewing behind the world’s food security.

With the help of award-winning environmental analyst Lester Brown, agricultural development expert Eric Holt-Gimenez, climatologist Eugene Tackle and team of agricultural scientists from the International Rice Research Institute, the documentary uncover the underlying issues behind the food we eat.

COMMENT:

Last year in November 2010, the UN warned that food prices could rise by 10%-20% this year (2011) after poor harvests and an expected rundown of global reserves. It is said that more than 70 African and Asian countries (I repeat.. Asian Countries) will be the worst hit. It's gloomiest forecast since the 2007/08 food crisis, which saw food riots in more than 25 countries and 100 million extra hungry people.

Currently, prices of wheat, maize and many other foods traded internationally have risen by up to 40% in just a few months in 2010. Sugar, butter and cassava prices are at 30-year highs, and meat and fish are both significantly more expensive in 2010.

The report stated that global food reserves, which currently stand at around 74 days, are expected to decrease significantly in 2011. Cereal reserves may drop by around 7%, barley nearly 35%, maize 12% and wheat 10%. Only rice reserves are expected to increase, by 6% in 2011.

This is the real thing happening in the world today. The shortage of food will happened not just in Malaysia, but around the globe as well. There's nothing that the federal government can do to stop the global shortage, and this also shows how stupid it is to think that the opposition party can do better if they made it to Putrajaya. In fact, I think the food shortage and racial tension is a very good recipe for unimaginable riots coming our way if they're allowed to grab the majority of the seats.

We all know that food and water are two things which can jeopardize any man's judgment. Family members will grouch when internet stop working or Astro stop broadcasting. People will get angry when car's stop running and power plants stop producing electricity. But all in all, the society can still survive if the government could at least ensure continuous and effective distribution of food to its people.

Running out of foods can really change any person. A father would murder someone who stole his bag of rice he needed to fed his hungry children. A mother would probably sell herself for the same reason. Starvation is the worst thing that can happened to you especially if you have children to look after. It's worst than being gassed by Nazi in Auschwitz. At least the gas killed the Jews in a few minutes, starvation on the other hand killed you slowly in a couple of days.

It's therefore very important to all of us to constantly remind ourselves that such upheaval is very close to happen. Actually, it's closer than anyone would have guessed.

Are we prepared yet?

  2. Thank you for telling me that!! That's a great idea not known by many Malaysians (including me). However, a bucket of that product currently priced at MYR542.01 (not including postal cost yet) which is roughly 20% from Malaysian general income per month. And Because of the recent Japanese earthquake, tsunami damage and radiation leaks, what dehydrated food the suppliers had in inventory has disappeared almost overnight. However, I'm definitely going to buy at least 2 bucket soon and promote this idea in my blog.
